How it works
Male-pattern loss is driven by DHT shrinking follicles. Finasteride knocks out a large share of the type 2 5-alpha-reductase enzyme that makes DHT, taking the pressure off so follicles can rebound.
How effective
Studies put finasteride at halting further loss in roughly 80–90% of men, with visible regrowth in about two-thirds. Start earlier for better odds, and it hits its stride with minoxidil — about 94% of men improved on the pair over a year.
Tablet or topical
The 1 mg oral tablet is the standard, most-studied form. A topical version targets the scalp with less DHT in the bloodstream, which may lower systemic side effects while keeping most of the benefit.
Side effects, honestly
A minority of men experience sexual side effects, usually reversible once they stop. Being hormone-active, it's prescription-only and not for women who might become pregnant. For stronger DHT control, dutasteride is the step up to discuss with a doctor.
